A first visit to the theatre
For many WebPlay students, WebPlay is the first time they
have visited the theatre. This article explains what
to expect.
You are going to the theatre to see My Uncle Arly. First of
all, you need to get to the theatre and to do this you either
need to catch the school bus or ride a train. When you arrive,
your teacher will pick up your tickets from the Box Office
and then you will be ushered in to the foyer by the Front
of House Staff to wait for the 15 minute call. The 15 minute
call is an announcement over a loud speaker from the Stage
Manager inviting you to take your seats ready for the performance.
At the door to the theatre a member of Front of House will ask to see your ticket and then show you to your seat. Once in your seat, you wait! While waiting you might talk to a friend or read through the programme until finally the lights go down and a silence falls over the audience as the curtains open and the performance begins.
You are now a member of a theatre audience! Being an audience member in a theatre is different from watching films or television. In a theatre the performers are in the same room as you. To do their best, performers need you to watch and listen closely. So when the lights go down and the performance begins, look out for the set and scenery, take a look at what the designer decided the characters should wear and listen to what the actors on stage say carefully. Then at the end of the play, if you enjoyed yourself, give the actors a round of applause.
We really hope you enjoy the show.
